Founders: Tom Pischel
Website: https://www.altgrocery.ca/ca
Elevator Pitch: AltGrocery is reshaping food accessibility by connecting consumers with independent grocers, farmers, and markets through an innovative map-based platform. Born from frustration over rising grocery prices and a reliance on large chains, AltGrocery empowers local food ecosystems by offering advanced tools for small vendors to market their products, connect with customers, and compete with industry giants. With features like live “Pop-up Produce” stands and an upcoming Farmers Market Tool, AltGrocery makes local, affordable, and sustainable food options more discoverable, helping communities thrive while addressing food affordability and transparency.
Growth to date: Since its launch in May 2024, AltGrocery has experienced significant growth:
Within two weeks of launching, the platform attracted 27,000 users, with Nova Scotia being the fourth most searched page. These milestones underscore AltGrocery’s rapid adoption and the growing consumer interest in alternative grocery options.

AltGrocery’s superpower is its ability to empower local food ecosystems through hyperlocal mapping technology and innovative tools that make independent grocers, farmers, and markets more discoverable and competitive. By prioritizing community over profit and leveraging technology to create accessible, scalable solutions, AltGrocery helps local food networks thrive while addressing food affordability and transparency.
What’s next? AltGrocery’s next steps include a major platform expansion and feature rollout in Spring 2025. Key initiatives include:
Feature Development: Launching a Farmers Market Tool with live interactive maps, vendor profiles, and product listings to help market organizers and vendors connect with local communities. Expanding the “Pop-up Produce” feature to support seasonal stands and geolocation-based sales.

Innovation, pivoting, and Restaurant-Quality Ramen – we opened our second restaurant location right before the pandemic and had to quickly pivot to figure out how to keep selling ramen (and our doors open). We created a DIY meal kit, packed by hand, that customers could take home to make. From selling these kits out of our restaurants, we opened an ecommerce channel and started shipping them to customers homes. We first shipped fresh kits, then fresh-frozen and later innovated an entirely new product that combined the same quality ingredients but with an added convenience – enter our Heat & Eat ramen.
We later realized there was a gap in the ramen market for a restaurant quality bowl of ramen that could be made at home (instant ramen was the only option) and decided to create one. We took the same recipe we serve at our restaurants and turned it into a frozen “puck”, ready to be cooked on the stove or microwave, and ready in minutes; simply just “Heat & Eat”! Founders: Robert Halvorsen, Ryan Stinebaugh, and Ian Speers
Website: www.pactomedical.com
Elevator Pitch: Our flagship patent-pending product is the SlimShot syringe – a compact and resource-saving pre-filled syringe for use across the healthcare industry and beyond. Though pre-filled syringes provide many benefits – including safety, precision, speed, and convenience – switching away from vials and empty syringes to pre-filled syringes has led to fewer syringes fitting on pallets than before. This is because pre-filled syringes come with their plungers almost fully extended. This wastes significant space during sterilization, shipping, storage, and distribution. We have invented a collapsible syringe with a 40% smaller packaging footprint relative to traditional pre-filled syringes.
Our SlimShot syringe design saves costs throughout the supply chain, reduces environmental impact, and brings the safety and quality benefits of pre-filled syringes to more patients around the world.

Founders: Shrad Rao and Ryan Dineen
Website: https://www.wagepoint.com
Elevator Pitch: Designed just for small businesses, Wagepoint helps make payroll simple. With an intuitive app, real-human support and a mission to bring the absolute best user experience to our customers, we uncomplicate things like taxes and calculations — even if payroll isn’t your thing. We’re proud to work with an amazing community of accountants and bookkeepers and, together, we help small businesses thrive.
Growth to date: We’ve grown our customer base to more than 28,000 across all our products and our team to more than 180 employees.
What is your company superpower? Wagepoint’s superpower is always operating with small business values at heart. Despite (or maybe because of) our growth and how many customers now trust our software to run payroll, caring for people comes first. We try our best to balance the interest of all parties at the table – customers, employees and the company.
What’s next? We’re excited to keep evolving and just launched a new, upgraded version of Wagepoint. We learned a lot from customer feedback and a decade of operating the former version. We’ve taken those learnings to transform the way small business owners, bookkeepers, and accountants manage payroll, including great new features to make the process even better.
