  • Internship
  • Ontario

University of Toronto, Waterloo, and McMaster

Job Summary:

Are you interested in exploring the world of commercialization, social impact, and entrepreneurship? The University of Waterloo, McMaster University, and the University of Toronto are collaborating with an exciting network of organizations across Canada on a new type of immersive training opportunity for undergraduate and Masters level students. This is a unique paid opportunity to explore careers in commercialization and entrepreneurship, build a network of experts in this area, and both learn and go through the steps necessary to build out your own innovation.

There are up to five (5) positions available from May 6 through August 23 (16 weeks). Note that pay is commensurate with your level of training between $25-30/hr. While the role is intended to be full-time, a part-time opportunity (10-15 hours per week) will be available for exceptional Masters-level student candidates.

In this role, the successful candidate will provide insights into the effectiveness of various experiential learning and training elements provided as part of the co-op experience. They will also network with founders, entrepreneurial faculty members, and leaders of innovation programs across several academic institutions. A core focus is learning about different ways of thinking about impact creation. Therefore the successful candidate will engage with research spin-outs, start-ups, social ventures, indigenous innovation, and founders from a wide range of lived experiences.

Job Responsibilities:

During the work term, the candidate will:
1. Support the pan-Canadian network in co-designing an exceptional experiential learning program that helps individuals better understand the range of careers available in commercialization, entrepreneurship, social impact, and adjacent fields (e.g., technology transfer, innovation procurement, research partnership, etc.).
2. Travel to incubators, accelerators, innovation hubs, hospitals, academic institutions, and other environments across Southwestern Ontario to learn more about the innovation ecosystem and engage in innovation development.
3. Work with key stakeholders to understand the founder development journey, complete environmental scans, co-develop training, and create other documents as necessary to support deeper understanding of innovation ecosystems in Canada.
4. Engage in unmet needs identification, solution development, and prototyping approaches (training will be provided) in an area of interest.
5. Other tasks related to the above described program, as discussed.

The ideal candidate is an individual who is curious about commercialization, social impact, and entrepreneurship. They will flourish in a learning environment that encourages creative and innovative thinking, leadership, and working with multiple stakeholders. No technical background is required. Having a diverse range of lived experiences is highly encouraged.

This is due by April 25 at 11:59 PM EST (although they are reviewed on a rolling basis). Late applications cannot be accepted.
